timing chain

any good videos on replacing a timing chain on a chevy 230 straight 6 ?

it aint got no chain,,,,,,,just a plastic gear on the camshaft,,,,,,I just did mine,,,,,

Those nylon gears the factory used are junk. Mine failed in the same way. Just shaved the teeth right off. The alloy replacement gear is so much more reliable.

timing gear set,,,,,,probably Oreillys,,,,,,,count the turns to loosen the rockers so you dont have to adjust the valves,,,,,,I HATE adjusting valves,,,,,,,

The SuzyVan had to pull me off the freeway when it happened to me,,,,,,you need to pull the radiator and harmonic balancer, lower the engine and trans so the camshaft can be pulled out under the front bumper,,,,you need to pull the pushrods,  lifters and oil pan,,,,,pull the cam gear off and press it on,,,,,,not,,,,,,,,,,,,,,an easy job,,,,,,,,,,,,,

oh wow may just have too get it done any idea what this would cost too have a mech too replace it ??

That kind of work, I'd say you are looking at $600-800 at a shop. I just had my lifters replaced with valve adjustment and it was over $600. Its at least a 4-6 hour rated shop time job at $75-100 per hour or more these days, but what can you do? Your engine (and van) are dead otherwise, right? You might as well put new lifters in if they are 40-50 years old at the same time. And if the radiator is pulled, might as well check it out too, get it boiled or re-cored while its out! Never ends....

I think you'd be at least 1000 at a shop, probably more. Nothing about this is actually hard, or difficult. Our vans are very simple, but its alot of labor and its time consuming.

,,,,welcome to  my world,,,,,,,these vans are junk, worn out, unreliable, unsafe and uncomfortable,,,,,,and you need time, equipment, skill, a place to work on it  OR lots of money to have someone do it for you,,,,,,,,and even finding someone to work on them and does a good job is hard,,,,,,and they will want to replace everything so they dont have it come back on them,,,,
so there is a lot of stuff that goes on before you are cruising on the road in a pretty van.......
so if you are serious about a van,  this is the place you want to be,,,,,,,,,,

You might consider a cam swap while you are at it, since you're removing the cam anyway.  The mercruiser 165 hp marine cam is a nice upgrade, is good for approx. 10% power increase, and can be had on ebay for a reasonable cost.

That one includes the cam gear already pressed on, so just install it with your old crank gear as long as the gears are both in good condition. Remember to always install new lifters when swapping the cam, and follow correct break-in procedures for flat tappet camshafts so you don't flatten a lobe during break-in.

All i can says is i love my vans and i ll do whatever it takes
