I fixed a bunch of stuff in AZ, but the steering was still iffy. It was in dire need of king pin bushings on the drivers side, but that wasn't going to happen until I got back to NJ.
SOOO as I drove rt66 and other cool roads on my way North East, my co-pilot Tony and I would stop and camp in Walmart parking lots. We made it all the way to Springfield,MO pulled into a gas station and heard a crunch from the steering wheel, and it tightened a bit, but it became smooth once the wheels were straight, so I pressed on towards St. Louis. I felt super tired and decided to stop in Lebanon, MO walmart for the night. I pull into the lot and start driving around looking for a good place to stop when suddenly.. Crack, pop, and the wheel got tight when turning left and it wound itself out when turning right. I was freaking out, but at 2am there isn't much you can do. Woke up the next morning and tried finding a box locally. No luck. No junk yards. No parts stores. No craigslist... So I posted on the H.A.M.B. and luckily a man with a collection of salvage cars 3hrs away in Pocahontas AR sent me a message saying he had one for $50...
Fixed it in a parking lot. Drove 1100miles straight home because I couldnt miss another day of work (school).
The kids love it. I love it and I've got plans for it.
The end..
