Insulation, Sound Deadening... Empty Insulation, Sound Deadening...

Post by VanHoosierdaddies Mon Feb 22, 2016 1:58 pm

    Hello,

I am looking to quiet down the van and insulate from heat. I found this Ultramat stuff on ebay, mistakenly thinking it was self adhesive, and since it was inexpensive, I bought two packages, 60 sq ft. You don't get the instructions until after you get the product, the instructions say to 1. use spray adhesive, 2. tape the edges or 3. snug fit. I have a can of spray adhesive, would that hold up to the heat and potential cold so this stuff doesn't fall down? anyone else tried this method or should I just return it and buy the self adhesive stuff. I did some searching and it looks like the water proof falshing sold at Lowe's etc. might be a cheap fix as well.

Yes, I saw that as well. I am wondering about the rest of the van, doors, roof, floor, walls etc. Probably have to get something else for the engine compartment...

    Thanks,

I haven't got to put the Hushmat that I bought to the heat test yet since the Van wont probably be running or moving until late spring, But I did my whole dog house with it. This stuff is a little more expensive but says its good up to 400 degrees. It's made with a butyl backing that is stickier than you can imagine. I found it on ebay for about half the price than what it retails for. I think it was about $150 for 36 sq. ft.. I had a bout 2.5 sheets left over after doing all 4 sides and the top. So far I'm impressed with the quality and the sound deading capability. It's some where around 3/16th's thick. If you knocked on the dog house before it was a very tinny sound, now if you knock on it it sounds like your knocking on a solid core oak door lol! I'm sure the other stuff you bought could be successfully used in other places like you mention. Hope this helps.

    Nick

Mine uses spray adhesive and has been in place in hot and cold temps for about a year. It was applied to a course surface. I think it will hold just fine with the spray adhesive.

I used a generic version of the Thermo-Tec Thermo-Guard FR Heat Shield material on the inside of my doghouse. It's a synthetic felt material about a quarter inch thick with silver foil both front and back. I glued it in place with 3m Auto | Advanced Headliner & Fabric Adhesive. I've driven the truck several times over the past six months and no signs of it coming loose, even on the underside of the doghouse lid. I haven't tested it on a really hot day in stop and go traffic, but feel confident it will survive and keep the heat inside the engine compartment.

Once I get everything painted, I will probably use the same material on the interior walls to reduce noise levels. The stuff I bought was about $30 for a 48 in. x 72 in. roll from a local auto trim & upholstery shop.

I decide to give the Thermo Tec 14125 double side stuff a try.  I will report back with pictures and results.
