    I GOT IT!!! A '64 GMC. Empty I GOT IT!!! A '64 GMC.

Post by Skulptorchaz Wed Mar 02, 2016 5:28 pm

    Hey guys,
Now after all my looking, and especially the help from the guys posting in "G" vans for sale, I have my van. She just came in from Colorado today.
She has a good "far away look" but up close, she needs a little attention. Smile Oh well, no problem, I am use to this.
I will be pulling things apart, working on it and looking for advice and ideas from all of you. I guess "Between the Seats" is the place to do it.
A couple of things I will be doing is putting a 292 and 700R4 in it. Pulling the wall board down to see what lies behind it. installing jack knife rear seat/bed (I think) and two more captains chairs in the middle. Flooring and wall coverings as well. Oh, and I will need to find all the rubber gaskets and window felt for doors and windows. Any suggestions?
The body is ....ok. Metal work is what I do so it won't be too much of an issue. Plus, it looks pretty cool as is. Just needs a little straightening.
So anyway, I am no longer a "wannabe" but a "newbie"!!
Thanx for all the help so far!!!!

In the meantime, it is the Glenwood Springs Colorado van that Joe Van posted in "G" vans for sale.
I'm trying!!! Just not sure why they won't post.

Congrats and Welcome! I am a '64 Chevy owner so we have a lot in common!  I can answer many of your questions and things that might come up.  I know all about the 5-Foot paint job, looks great from 5 feet away! LOL   Stock repro door rubbers are available from Steele, but very costly.  Look on eBay for some universal hollow D door gasket, comes in rolls and many sizes, can do a whole van and should work fine.  Comes with self stick edges too, I used it for a few bad spots in my door gaskets and for my doghouse lid.  Here's a few interior pics to show what a paneled, headlined and carpeted '64 can look like with a little work!  How are your seats?  you will find there are limited choices due to height and width. Very few seats fit and clear the doghouse.  I have Suburban Seating Co. euro SUV seats, but they discontinued them....I keep the back wide open for hauling band gear, etc. If needed for camping, a blow up mattress suffices, there are limitations to having fixed rear seats and beds, depends on your needs, every owner is different!

BTW, more thoughts...engine and trans swapping , as you know, is a major ordeal unless you are a mechanic and have/own a shop.  That tranny will need a custom made rear mount, lots of info and pics around on doing that. IMHO, if the stock engine runs good and the trans is fine and you can live with the stick shift, I'd leave it as is and drive and enjoy it.  Bigger engines lead to heating problems in the small doghouse, there are dozens of threads here about that issue, bigger engines also need bigger brakes to stop and from experience, driving these 50 year old vans at very high speeds can be tricky.  You asked for ideas and advice, JMHO's...

Many, many thanx Vantasia!!! I will need all the help I can get. There really isn't anything I can't do metal wise as I have a fabrication shop. And altho I think I am a fair fabricator, I'm not into re-designing the mouse trap if there are already proven designs out there. Trial and error can be fun but, ya gotta have time for it.
Your interior looks really good. Mine will be a bit more padded and more seats but I will create those to be easily removed. I want mine to be pretty versatile as well.
I already have a 292 ready to drop in and my girlfriend would REALLY appreciate an auto so, it looks like that is the way I will need to go. I already figure the radiator will need changed as well. (I also modify radiators for my Hot Rod buddies.)
Thank you again for your help!!!!!
I hope to be able to contribute when I come up with something you guys might like. (I live for creativity for both function and form.)

Cool, ask member Donivan to chime in on the trans support and where to put the auto shifter, Joe Van did a nice set up with a Lokar on top of the doghouse!  Recore Rad is a must!  I had mine done with bigger tubes 2 x 45 x 5/8" instead of the stock 2 x 30 x 1/2", about 40% more area and I run ice cold with stock 194 six, the tanks may fit a 3 row core if you do that work. Recoring with original tanks much better than cheap after market aluminum ones.....remember, doghouse has limitations of size and mounting things like radiators...Again, cruise the threads, many pics of all these and engine swap stories and how to's!  Good luck with it....teach her stick, that's half the fun of driving a vintage machine, takes you back to that time, my wife loves driving the old stick shift and popping the clutch!  One thing if that van has the original trans, 1st is not synchroed, you have to come to full stop to get back to 1st and don't try to downshift into it either at a light, if you get caught between gears, just rev up 2nd to keep rolling in traffic.....hey, these were sold as economical delivery trucks in 1964...not hot rods!

    Welcome!

I recently made a gasket by tracing and cutting out the shape first, then holding that over the accelerator pump opening, stamping the pattern (all of the small holes) into the material using a ball peen hammer..very carefully. Just tapped it out.

I am not experienced mechanically so for all I know this might be an old trick. But it worked great! A real time saver.

    Thanks Gents!
I have a B&M Quick Silver shifter that I had in my '56 Chevy. It also is cable drive. I was thinking of using that but, not sure where. I can see how the logical spot would be on the dog house as there isn't much room elsewhere. Bad thing is, that is where my dog was going to ride!!! Smile Smile Smile (My girlfriend has an issue with giving up the right seat. Smile Smile ) I was actually contemplating fabbing in a different steering column. Not really a big deal. It would keep things clean and more space. IF, I get to doing that, I'll give you a play by play. BUT, if for some reason you know that it won't work, PLEASE, by all means let me know what you know. By the same token, if you know what works best, I'm all ears. I've built several "rods" but there may be something inherent to vans that I am not aware of.
I am a "conservative space mizer" so I like things to fit and not take up more space than they need. That goes for my house (see it here www.amstudio.us . Just hit the HGTV button. You'll probably find it interesting!), to my coach, to my shop and now to my van. Smile I guess I believe in keeping the excess to a minimum and getting the most out of things. Weird, I know by today's standards but, it's also a fun challenge.
Thank you all again and I look forward to having fun with my new toy!!
OH..... I guess I should post this in another forum but, does anyone know if the exhaust manifold of the 6 I have in my van (probably stock, but I don't know yet) will fit my 292?? I'm guessing not but was just wondering. (6's are new to me too.) The guy did not know what size 6 it actually was. I'll have to find the numbers and run them.
    Thanks again!!!!!!!!

Glad to see you figured out the pic posting instructions. So, it looks like you have some sort of air-ride system in the back? Are you going to build around it or relocate so that it's out of the way? I like the wing on the rear of the roof too. Looks like Joe Van's.

I can't wait to see what you do with your van! Looks like a Great base to start with!!! Twisted Evil

Yeah Vanny, I'm going to move it. It just doesn't work there. I really only want it for "helper" height". I'm not going to dance it. So, I think I will use a smaller tank and connect the two back lines together as well as the front, That will shrink it down quite a bit. I may even negate one pump. This is just my initial idea. I'll know more when I get into it.
I'll probably put it up against the drivers side wall and make a box around it for a small side table. I can quiet the pump down that way and hide everything.

The 194-230-150-292 all use the same basic cylinder design.  The manifolds will fit all these engines.  There is a larger 292 exhaust manifold available that flows better, but you can use the smaller 194-230-250 if you need to.  It will bolt up.

The 292 is about 1.5" taller than a 194-230-250 engine.  So you will need to add length to your exhaust in order to make it mate up the the taller 292.

Also keep in mind, on a 292, the passenger side motor mount is in a different location.  You will need to do a little fabrication to make this work.  There is a conversion adapter sold, but it blocks off the fuel pump.  If you use the conversion adapter, you will need to run an electric fuel pump.

Here is one of the large 292 exhaust manifolds:

Thanks Kooky!!! My header that was on my present engine was so low ("how low was it"??? Smile ) ...it was so low, it caught the trailer on the way off and bent it (bad). And altho I have the ability and means to fix it, I think I will forgo it. Mainly for two reasons - I understand a stock manifold works better for a driver (heat for carb) and, the fact that you say a larger manifold is better.
One thing I believe I am going to do is "split the manifold". I looked on the internet to see if there is a beneficial configuration but, it doesn't seem so. I have a forge and weld cast all the time. I would just like to make sure the exhaust flows well. I may just "Y" the pipe to go to both headers but, they tell me a "split manifold" sounds better. I don't know. I guess it would have to depend on if what people tell me is the truth. Thoughts??
Also, I am aware of the mount/pump issue. (bummer) No doubt I can fab one up but do you know if there is a way to keep the pump as well as the mount? I guess I can figure that out when I get in there but I was just curious. (There is a brand spanking new pump on my engine).
Thanks again for all the insight guys!!
