Post by uante Fri Nov 27, 2015 8:47 am

    Hey Guys,
Ok, I took my windows out of my van almost a year ago because the weather stripping was shot and I wanted to paint, repair drilled holes from previous mirrors etc.

Now it's time to put it all back together and I vaguely remember how it was coming out, but I'd hope to find something on here about the process. After searching I haven't come up with anything on the subject and was wondering If anyone had a thread about this "Favorited" or saved as a "Watched Topic"?

If not I'll make one documenting my trials and errors... lol

    Thanks Mr. D.

I was just going to post the pictures I captured from the Shop Manual...They are helpful, but again, a little vague.

Here's what I have from the Manual

I think I'm going to start by using blue painters tape to cover the painted areas around the window and then use thicker tape over that for added protection from scratches. Then lay out all my parts, old and new, and get to "figuring" Cool

If you do a Vintage-Vans search: "door window assembly order", -will find it in the results page 3, basically the same as what Abitibi wrote

Got the new and old window parts out today and Ugh! Looks like I have to find a way to rivet the brackets onto the new division bar. In the picture the new one is in the middle and the old one is on the right. They gave rivets in the kit, but I'll need to get a rivet gun...haven't had one is ages.

So I gather you need something like an Arbor press to put these rivets in? Is there a 'rivet flaring tool or fitting to smash down a rivet?

I used a rivet gun but had to buy the rivets as with the rivet gun the rivets had to have a hole thru them to use it, as the rivets supplied were solid. -a quick job with the rivet gun

Did you just use a regular pop rivet type gun...No issues with the rivets working loose? I always found that pop rivets didn't hold up to stresses very well.

Yes, a regular Home Depot rivet gun, but the rivets I used were slightly larger dia than the old, so had to drill the holes slightly. The finished product seems strong, no way they will work loose

I bought a special rivet tool to do these. It's a pretty expensive tool. Mine cost $175.00 used. I had to modify a die to fit inside the channel as they were too wide as is. The one I listed below doesn't come with the correct dies to set those rivets. Those are sold separately.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hand-Rivet-Squeezer-3-Reach-w-6-Rivet-Sets-New-/280750358896?hash=item415e068170:m:mzVJU70QXC78cOw5LG-JOQg

A much cheaper rivet set sold. This is a simple tool that you use with a hammer. It does the job but not as good as the hand tool. It's subject to how well you hit it with the hammer. Hard to be precise with it.

These are the correct dies you need to set the rivets. They are sold individually but cost about $25 each.

I just redid all my channels, felts, and vent window rubber.
Once you have the vertical channel out the glass will slide out via where it rolls up and goes back in the same way.
Then the new channel goes back in and the glass seats into it before you bolt it back into the bracket.
I pop riveted it as well, slightly drilled out the holes to accommodate a larger rivet and they do not impede the glass at all.

Did you use steel or aluminum rivets?

I think going to go this route as well since I need to get a pop rivet gun for a vw project I'm doing.

So I have a question....The vent window seal piece that is riveted on has a metal backing from the factory, Do I have to peel that rubber off and reuse the metal backing piece?

Yes, you have to reuse the metal backing piece; but I bought the "Seal for back edge of vent window" separately from Mac's and that seal comes attached to the metal backing

Thanks Carl, I'll have a look into that. It would be worth it if it isn't too expensive to have it ready to go instead of trying to contact cement (or something) the new rubber onto the the old backing.

I got the driver's side window and weather stripping installed last weekend. It took about 4 hours to do but now I have it figured...the other side should only take about an hour. I'll post a step by step here on that side in case someone else is interested in the process.

I started putting in my passenger side window when I noticed I didn't have the Grooved Inner Diameter Washer that goes on the vent window shaft. I looked everywhere for it, but can't find it. It's been a while since it was taken apart, so I'm sure it's gone.

Does anyone have a spare? I thought the vent window would be ok without it, but it just flops around and there's no way to adjust the tension on the window. They might have something at a fancy bolt place, but i thought I'd try here as well.
