Super Scoop

Hey yawl,

My old man had a Super Scoop on his '68 Chevy 108 back in the 70's and scrapped it when he brazed on the the glass top from a Vista Cruiser...

Getting back on topic, I know that the Super Scoop's went out of production back in the late 70's, and that I'd have better luck finding Hoffa's body now than to find a Super Scoop.

My question is, does anyone know of anyone that has fabricated their own out of fiberglass? Or does anyone know anyone that has fabricated their own using an old engine hood scoops, like the old 6-packs?

Any info or insight on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

The super scoops are still sold once in a while on ebay!! look 4 them there!! some are foung on salvage yard vans too

I had one back in the 70's.
the problem was the sun dried the plastic and then they all would crack.

I reckon that I could probably make one from fiberglass. I figure if I paint it to when I paint the body, it shouldn't crack.

Is it actually a shroud, or does the super scoop emblem open up?

That looks a lot like the shaker scoop on my 70 Pont Trans Am. Might be able to use one of them. The early ones (70-76)are harder to find and spendy the later ones (77-up) are easier to find and less pricey. There is also after market fiberglass ones out there. Just a thought.

I'm thinking, maybe I could produce my own Super Scoop.

Possibly use a block of styrofoam to cut, shape, and smooth into a mold. Then use fiberglass cloth and resin to lay over top of it to create the scoop. Or, possibly use the same idea, but graft in the vent door of a venturi type vent.

So many ideas, once I get my shit together and give it a go, I'll post a picture of my idea. If somebody doesn't beat me to it.

Look at some RV supply stores, they make new modern vent scoops for big RVs and trailers, even two-way pop-up vents that can scoop or exhaust.  I'm sure I've seen a new plastic vent similar to super scoop at one of these sites. Look for one called MaxxAir, very similar to a super scoop, under $75 shipped, white or black...

Do the scoops tend to leak over time? Curious what kind of air flow they produce as well.

I remember you mentioning the MaxxAir to me a while back. I looked into the MaxxAir Delue, and that bad boy is tough. I really want to stay old school with the Super Scoop (Actually, with the Vista Cruiser roof, to be honest, but since they are just as hard to come by...), but with all of the features of the Deluxe, it is definitely my option 2, granted that I cannot successfully fabricate my own Super Scoop.

I have installed and used 2 Venturi Vents in the past and the 3-4 years I had them they had no issues and those would move some air. To me putting in an "older" used one might have issues. Found one on a mid Dodge once and the sun exposure had tweaked it way out of shape along with the cracks. NOS might be okay but would be somewhat hard to replace if damaged.

I had a Super Scoop on my 66 GMC in the seventies. It was cool as a bubble that you could use to peek outside and it would move some air....
On the downside, I never was able to seal it properly and the door and hinge assembly always leaked, as well......The sun distorted it and the plastic did not hold up well against oxidation and sun damage....
Those Maxxair deals are a louvered "rain cover" which installs over a conventional hinged crank-up vent.... If it could be epoxied down, it would shield the mounting screws and calking of the vent from the weather.....not sure of the durability of the plastic, but they are kinda big and unsightly.....
I've been looking at "marine" hatches as a possible high quality alternative to the available sunroofs (that always seem to leak)..... Very Pricey, Though!
