I got my v8 in and I wanna put a new exaust system on .I want a 1970s sound to it .flow masters and all this new stuff is fine but it want suit my van .
when I was growing up thrush was my favorit sounding [not the turbo ,but the cheep o tin type.]
I don't know any thing about the new thush or cherry bombs but like the thought of the nostalgic ness of it.
if any of you have seen cheech and chongs ;still smokin;, the sound of the t-bird is what im after?

MHO, When I got my van, the PO had a pair of red steel cherry bombs on it, sounded great, but was very loud inside, the body would resonate, couldn't even enjoy the radio going down the highway. With a van , you hear everything underneath that you don't hear in a car. I switched back to flowmaster like regular mufflers, not as loud inside or out but still sounds vintage.

    Tom,

I researched mufflers a lot before doing my exhaust over a year ago. Unfortunately, I didn't get to drive it much before parking it.

I had decided upon Magnaflow as they are S/S and I was hoping for a quiet ride. While I discovered that my motor needed complete overhauling shortly thereafter, I didn't feel they had much rumble compared to whatever came off of the van. They didn't have the up and down chop when it was idling and pulling up somewhere didn't cause heads to turn much to see what was approaching.

They are not the cheapest but are most likely the quietest muffler short of a turbo or Dynamax that are almost new car stock. I believe Dynamax is a Thrush company.

I recall distinctly reading a lot of reviews referencing Thrush "drone" at certain speeds. That would drive me crazy and steered me away. Even the Magnaflows for the time I used them had a drone only at very low speeds while going through my neighborhood, but my motor was not running properly.

Magnaflows are similar to glasspacks and have no chambers, so not much up and down idle/rumble sound but definitely quieter. Similar to me as a Borla sound wise. Probably less old school and more modern muscle car.

I am researching once again for a nice sound without being too quiet. My Magnaflows were accidentally tossed by the shop doing the work, so I back having to decide quiet vs. sweeter exhaust sound.

Cherry Bomb makes a variety of mufflers, so go to YouTube and put in the motor you have along with Cherry Bomb. In fact, they have a audio/video that demos each design.

I just have a stock white box muffler from NAPA. Its quite when I drive normally but growls when I stand on it. I am not sure what it fits but it is 3" inlet and two 2" outlets.

I'm going to go with JUST sidepipes with thermotec heat shields behind them because 1) I want to move exhaust heat out from under the body! 2) They look cool and 3) sound great and 4) offer an illusion of lowness to the ground that makes extreme lowering unnecessary. A mild drop with a forward rake will put the front low because of the overhang and the pipes will complete the low look....... this will also allow me more hidden space under the van to hang heat sources lower to keep heat off the floor.....

KK's yellow van "Hella Sunshine" in the "sidepipes" thread demonstrates the illusion of lowness I'm talking about here..... notice how low his front bumper and pipes are, yet he has plenty of front tire clearance!

If you want the old glass pack sound, then just get those.

I had 2.5" dual cherry bomb glass packs on the '69 van I sold back in April.  It was just a stock 350 chevy but with those cherrybombs it sounded great!
