The Dodge Lodge Empty The Dodge Lodge

Post by jseiff Mon Sep 14, 2015 7:03 pm

Hey all. I was fortunate enough to pick up a 1967 A100 this summer. There's been obvious exterior cosmetic work done, but most stuff inside is original. And much of it still works. It's got a 318 with 97K on it. From the southwest, so little rust. There's no floor, ceiling, backseats...etc. This thing is just a metal box right now. I've got some big plans for this I will share along the way.

For now I'll share what I've had done to get this thing a bit more reliable:

    - gas tank was rusted and patched several times. got it resealed inside and out and replaced sending unit.
    - carb had crap from aforementioned rusty tank. cleaned and tuned up.
    - point ignition upgraded to electronic.
    - changed plugs and wires.

    All the best,
    Jordan

    Hi all,

I'd like some help identifying this plug under the van. I'm wondering if there's a block heater?

There's a power cord with female end at the front (accessible from under the grille). I followed it back where it's connected under the engine as shown below. Any ideas?

that would be a block heater  , . it can be removed and the freeze plug reinstalled easily if it doesn't work or don't want it.
considering where you live that may be a good thing to keep.

What Dix said. If there is no damage to the plug and it works, it's great in the winter. I used to have one on my 80's Chevy and if I plugged it in overnight in the winter, it would start up nice and smooth on those cold winter mornings. However, if the plug is damaged or if you're not going to be running it in the winter, there's no real need for it. So, if it's not damaged, I would just leave it "just in case" you decide to start it in the winter time on one of those cold Minnesota mornings! lol!

Awesome, thanks for the replies. Was hoping it was a block heater!
The plug looks good but I'm not sure how to test it without waiting until a cold morning?

Best way to test that block heater is to plug it in and listen. You should here a quiet hissing sound. Most, if not all Canadian vehicles, come stock with block heaters. If you don't have it plugged in at -30...you are going to have a tuff time starting that engine. The one on your van is just to keep the antifreeze warm which helps keep the oil warm so it will start easier. The circulating block heaters actually keep your antifreeze flowing as if the vehicle is running, and heat the engine to a hotter temp then just a regular block heater ever will. I have a circulating one on my snowplow and when I start the plow up I have hot air blowing through the vents Immediately.

    Thanks big w.

What kind of current/power does it draw? Curious about powering it from an auxiliary battery with an inverter for a couple hours prior to start.

The latest task I completed was taking apart the doghouse to repaint and reinsulate. More pics to come.

I used Rustoleum High Heat (up to 2000 deg) flat black for the outside.
And I used this insulation for the inside.
I also applied a weather strip to the base (between the doghouse panels and the floor). Replaced some of the hardware too.

I've also installed new lap belts.

Years ago I had one of those oldsmobile 5.7 converted diesels in a 81 gmc truck. ( No need for sympathy cards. ) It had a block heater. (I spent a lot of time under the hood I should know.) I put it on a timer so the block heater would rev up two hours before I could swear at the truck. (I mean try to start.)
to save on electricity. Now mind you I don't live in Fargo. It does get cold in new england. 10 F the truck would whirl over pretty fast. I never tried running 50 miles of extension cord to get to work. (maybe that might have helped.) I do know it made a differerance. I had a case of ether on the passenger floor so when I got out of work I could try to start the truck. Most of the cold evenings I went home with the secretary, the only fun thing about owning that truck!

UPDATE! We've had some great fall weather here in the upper Midwest so I've been taking advantage of it. I have started turning this DODGE into a LODGE.

These photos show the progress of the flooring. Here are the layers:
    - sound deadening RAAMmat
    - underlayment padding
    - 1" foam board insulation
    - 1/2" OSB as subfloor

I plan to install a vinyl or laminate floor as the final layer. Other work to do first!
