Yes, look for the casting number on the side of the block just above the oil pan line near the dip stick and sending unit. A small inspection mirror and flashlight helps to read it upside down, should be 7 digits and then look at those website listings.

What year van? 64 would have a 194, 65-66 could be 194 or optional 230, 2nd gen 67+ could have 250 or more , many of these vans have had engine swaps by now...which is better is subjective, all are good if running good, they all do the job...my '64 194 is rated 120 HP and pulls fine for all hauling and highway speeds....all I need...see what you have...

I have a 65' panel van three on the tree. It runs but it's rigged so I had to jump to coil. I need to straighten it out. Not looking forward to it

Are you sure, that number does not come up on any of the lists, there are two sets of numbers one closer to the front and one over the starter, I even tried using 8's instead of nines, also the number on the intake manifold is just that, a part number for that manifold, not the engine number,. but I did find several references to that number being a 250 which would have been swapped into your van and this from a 2006 forum :
Hi arnie258 WOW! THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
    Block casting number 3994257.
It came up as a 3.8L 230 cid 1963-1970 L-6 Chevy Truck engine, so I'd say you have a 230!....don't panic the wiring, get or download a diagram for these vans from a shop manual repro, about $12 or find one here, all circuits are pretty easy to follow if most of your original wiring is intact, plus if you run into a problem ask it here and you will get several helpful prompt replies with pics.diagrams!
