I'm thinking of re-wiring the entire van and installing a modern fuse box. I'm sure it is going to be a tedious process, but I was just wondering if anyone else here has done it?

I'm wondering how much I'm looking at spending, and how long it will take me to complete it. I'm also thinking of installing some quick disconnects to the wires running into the doghouse, to make the doghouse removal a bit easier.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

What is there like 6 wires to the oil and Temp gauge, starter, coil, back up lights and main feed wire that goes on the outside of the doghouse, under the drivers seat that can be moved to the inside of the doghouse,,,,,,you should just put a 1 wire 3rd Gen Alternator on it and get rid of all that voltage regulator wiring,,,,,,,2 universal fuse blocks would upgrade the old fuse box,,,,,,,,just some rolls of wires and connectors,,,,,

Forgive me for my slowness, the electrical is new to me and reading a wiring diagram might as well be like trying to decipher Sanskrit to me, but if I swap out a generator for the voltage regulator, I can eliminate that big roll of wires coming from the engine box. From there, all I really have to run is the rear lights, front lights, wiper/washer, radio and the heater, correct?

And all I'm really looking at is spending a ton on my patience, and maybe $120 on wiring materials and a 3rd gen alternator?

I found some kits mentioned in a thread on the VCVC website. Also found a wiring diagram for a 2nd Gen, which like I mentioned above, is completely foreign to me.

    This should be fun.

It depends on how much you can or want to handle,,,,,,,,to me, those wiring kits are a waste of money,,,,,,,,they are not exactly built for our vans,,,,,,,,in my World, you just do 1 wire at a time,,,,pull it out, put a new in its place,,,,,,and pretty soon, you begin to see a pattern and it starts to make sense to you,,,,,,thats how I explain stuff here,,,,1 step or 1 wire at a time,,,,get it done, do the next one,,,,along the way we upgrade the wiring,,,,you dont need that old low output Alternator with all those wires going to a mechanical points voltage regulator when you can add a 1970's Alternator with the regulator built in for about $30,,,,,,but this is the  way I do our vans,,,,,,,,,,,see what the other guys say to do,,,,,,

K-Noods here a link to probably the  best 2nd gen wiring diagram that's available.
