Auto Transmission question and clarification for 225 and 318 Empty Auto Transmission question and clarification for 225 and 318

Post by mlansb Fri Oct 31, 2014 10:17 am

    Hi All,

I am accumulating parts for my 318 with AT swap of a 3sp and 6 cyl.  Currently, I am in a deep discussion with a salvage yard I found on the internet and we both disagree. Before I lay down the cash, I want to see what I am getting into.

First, its is my understanding that the same 727 AT was used on both the 318 and slant 6 versions.  The main difference is, if that AT is bolted to a 318, it requires an adapter plate.  Otherwise, the slant 6 will bolt directly to the standard 727 loadflite.

Can someone please either correct my research or clarify if indeed it is the same transmission, and which models require the AT adapter plate.

I have also found that the adapter plate is fairly rare.  Is their another adapter plate that can be used?  Is suspect you have to use the A100 adapter plate due to the mounting of the starter vs. other models, but not exactly positive on that one.

    Thanks!

That partially helps.  Thanks! In going through the service manuals for the 1968 A100, it seems that only the 727 was used on the A100 with all their motor options including /6 and 318. I am mostly certain of this, but ..... Only problems is the manual makes no reference to the adapter plate, from what I can find.  I am making an assumption, that the adapter plate was only used on the 6 cylinder versions as the 727 as it was used on other mopar car/trucks with V8.  Thanks for the input.

the adaptor plate was used on the /6 and not used on the 273 or the 318.

The /6 only used the adapter plate (adapts /6 to V8 pattern/starter mount) in the early years (64-66?), after that, they made the 727 with the /6 bolt pattern and it bolted straight up.

Thanks!  you have it backwards the 318 A727 trans was used in our vans exclusively. if it came with a 6 it was used with a adapter.
