Wiring messed up
Well, I got the truck back down on the ground after a complete suspension rebuild, only to find out the wiring is all messed up. No brake lights, when I turn on a right or left turn signal, they both flash, when I hit the brakes, the dash signal indicators both light up. I was told by the previous owner that the wiring had been changed over to a later model van harness to simplify future repairs. Now it's just a mess. I'm considering a whole new vehicle harness to correct problems and simply replace 49 year old wires. I know others have done a harness replacement and am open to suggestions and recommendations. Who do you feel has the best harness, costwise and for ease of installation? Any and all help is deeply appreciated.

Re: Wiring messed up
Hi docmcg, I would start at the brake light bulbs / taillight housings. Make sure the bulbs are working, check if the sockets are grounding well enuff to carry juice, the same results happen to my trailer when the ground isn't making good connection. If it has a trailer light set up, make sure there isn't something crossed or hot to ground etc. You may be able to test ground with a jumper wire from screw hole to good clean ground after you take the taillight lense off....(I have two wires with clips on the ends for just this type of testing) I would do both because after the cover is off...the socket is loose from the body on my truck. We just went through this on our A100 4x4...it's been sitting since 2003 when the wildfire got tooo close and melted a bunch of stuff!!
Best of luck

Re: Wiring messed up
Thanks. I've decided to install a new harness and be done with all the headaches. I've been checking a few kits on line.

Re: Wiring messed up
I just sent for an EZ wiring harness just yesterday. How did your installation go, and are you happy with yours? I bought the 12 circuit harness. I live in central CA and will probably put a Vintage Air AC system in it. The harness will have spare circuits for the add on.

Re: Wiring messed up
Ironically they're called EZ Wiring. They're located back east somewhere, I forget now. Check them out at ezwiring.com. I got a 12 circuit harness for $170 plus shipping. Total to CA $190.

Re: Wiring messed up
well,,,,,a ground problem is not a harness problem,,,,,,take each bulb out of the front and see if that shuts the dash arrows off,,,,,,,make sure someone did not put a single contact bulb in up front,,,,,,,

Re: Wiring messed up
Hey Doc, sorry for the delay in replying. Its been a chaotic week...
I ordered mine directly from EZWire online. My original harness was unmolested when I started working on the van. My problem was the insulation was brittle. Every time I flexed a wire, mostly while trying to clean them, a large section of insulation would break off. I just didn't feel safe putting it back in, even if I shrink wrapped all the bad spots. So I got a new harness.
I have not put it in yet, but will let you know how it goes when I do. I am willing to bet you will be done with yours first, so I will call you for help!

Re: Wiring messed up
Just received my new wiring harness today. Looks like a box of colored spaghetti! Looks a little daunting, but have been assured it will go okay, as long as you go slow and don't get distracted. We'll see. I'll let you all know how it goes. Gonna take a while so be patient!

Re: Wiring messed up
Haven't done much on the truck lately. Installed a set of bucket seats and 3 point seat belts from an '02 Neon. There's been some issues popped up at home that might mean I'll have to sell the truck (probably will). I do appreciate all the great info and help I've received here on this great website. You guys have all been great. Thank you all. I'll post again later to update.
