    Hello,
My reverse switch is not activating and I'm not sure if it's installed properly.  Can someone with a functional switch like this one post a pic of it while in reverse??

Ah, so that's what the hole in the lever is for! My '64 has the hole in the lever for the rod, but no switch. The BU lights were not standard until '66 but must have been optional for '64-65?

Thanks for that pic rocky69rhodes! That confirms the lever position Don was suspecting before I posted the request for pictures.
I repositioned the lever and rod and my lights are working properly. Now I only have 99 things left to fix!

Doni or anyone else with a factory installed switch, what is the exact length of the rod so I can make one? I ordered a switch to add backup lights to my '64, mainly to let others know I'm in reverse since without back windows on a panel its hard to see. Once the lights work, I want to add a back up camera activated off the same switch with the screen mounted to the windshield in place of the mirror! I might also add a beeper too....

Search on ebay for 'backup switch 4 speed chevy'  Most of these are for Muncie 4 speed applications, but with a little tweaking, you might be able to make something like this work for sagniaw:

You just need to cut a piece of coat hanger,  make a loop in it so you can bend the rod to adjust the switch to work,,,,

I found the same AC Delco switch as in Rocky's picture and I'm hoping/assuming it fits the 4-bolt cover GM 3-speed without modifying the mounting holes? The lever has the small hole in it for the wire rod so I'm thinking this trans was set up for the switch, although a PO may have changed it, I'll know once I get the switch....

My picture is for an automatic transmission,,,,,,but any type of switch can work,,,,,even a push button as long as the lever hits it when its in reverse,,,,,,,but CORVETTE owners prefer the REAL THING,,,,,,,,

I got the NOS switch but only the bottom hole lines up on the 4-bolt cover '64 trans, but a short bracket extension to the top bolt will make it work. I tested it with a meter, when the two small holes line up, the one in the switch lever and one in the switch housing, like in the above pics, its on! So making a rod from drop ceiling hanger wire will be easy, its a little stiffer than coat hanger wire and the perfect diameter to fit the switch and shift lever holes, will post a pic when its done in case anyone else wants to use the '66-67 switch on a '64-65 van.

67supervan: disconnect your linkage and manually move the switch lever to discover where it needs to be to illuminate the reverse lights. Then reconnect the linkage accordingly, and bend the rod if necessary.

As I mentioned, if this comes up again, the factory switches have a small alignment hole in the lever and housing, line them up by eye or with a small wire, drill bit or bent  paper clip and the switch will be "on"! Look at the pics, you can see the alignment holes.

I added backup lights to my '64 using the Delco Remy Switch #1993358 made for the later 6 bolt manual trans.  Had to make a bracket extension to reach the top bolt.  My shifter lever had the hole in it for the connecting rod, so if BU lights were an option in '64, they must have had a different switch.  But when I checked the GM Heritage center option sheet, it does not show BU lights available as an option for '64 or '65.  I decided BU lights are a must because all modern drivers are used to seeing them come on when you are backing and freak out when they see you backing with no warning, not so much as I needed the light to see at night when I back up!  I used Reese trailer backup lights, easy to find on eBay
( http://www.ebay.com/itm/261194387897 )  and relatively low cost and they look close to the original '66 style.  They come with a thick foam gasket and by adding an extra gasket made of an old mousepad behind them, you can tighten the inside mounting screw and leave the outside one looser to compensate for the body curve, see picture, looks great.  I ran switch power off the fuse block with and added a 10-amp fuse and used plastic wire loom anywhere the wire touches frame for added protection.  Here's the pics:

Switch with extension made from an old corner bracket, rod is made from a drop ceiling wire, just the right diameter and strong! The grommets help hold the rod in place.
    1966 g10 3sp Reverse Switch Gedc1317

Side view, note offset bend in wire, switch didn't line up perfect with lever.
    1966 g10 3sp Reverse Switch Gedc1318

Top and side views showing gasket to fill body curve!

    Lights in action....
    1966 g10 3sp Reverse Switch Gedc1321
    1966 g10 3sp Reverse Switch Gedc1322

So there ya have it, I think they look great and function, very bright, use 1156 bulbs, not concerned with correctness of the light, van is already a mild custom, I already added side markers and a 3rd center brake light, all in the name of safety.  I may also change one of the bulbs to a combination beeper light bulb.

I paid well under $100 shipped for the same switch, but the ad didn't mention Vette, just van! Same part number...it says G-10 right on the box shown in the listing too. Our vans share a few other Vette parts like the shift rod swivel and I was at a cruise night and a '64 Vette had the same dash knobs as my van! I parked next to him and said they were made at the same time by the same company...the owner wasn't too thrilled, it was like how can you compare a van to my vintage Vette...
