Exhaust fumes in the cab. Gettin Gassed!

Anyone have any thoughts on how to keep exhaust fumes out of the cab while driving? I am getting totally high when I drive my '65. The rear doors don't have weather stripping so I'm guessing that may be the main source of the fumes but does anyone have any other suggestions for keeping the fumes out? I don't want a DUI.

at least Tape around the outside edges of the rear doors and you will live longer,,,,,

The door seals are available through Steele Rubber. They fit well and seals are a must have if your fighting fumes. Plus they will quiet things down tremendously. Perhaps someone knows of a more cost friendly solution? (other than tape)   That was my first thought to Don.

If you roll down the front door windows you make it worse because the air blowing by aqctually pulls more air out then it lets in and makes a vacuum  (negative presure) in the van as the air gets sucked out the front and that sucks the fumes in throught the back doors right past you as it exits the front windows.

You need to invert the vent windows and/or open the lower vent even turn on the heater fan and do what ever it takes to cause the cab interior to become presurised with fresh air from the front so it will blow out the  leaks at the sides and rear of the van.

When  holding that big fatty  joint while you are driving; observe which way the smoke goes and get the air flow in the right direction to keep the fumes out. and Oh ya the, "I'm getting totally high while driving my 65" ; I don't want a DUI. thats a differnt thing ; We've all done the Cheach and Chong thing at one time or another but thats got nothing to do with door seals brother!

eBay is full of nice 'D' channel weather stripping that is much cheaper that seals and works just as well like this, comes in several sizes:

I even used the same stuff on my doghouse cover and some of the rear doors where my seals were missing and it seals great, no fumes.

I am temporarily using good ol S10 door seal to seal the huge gap between my rear door. kind of ugly, but functional until I get around to painting the van.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think the problem may be an old muffler with a lot of holes in it but also the fact that the tailpipe ends about 4 inches under the body and is located right under a little vent window on the side, back portion of the van (don't know if the window is factory issue or custom job).

Having a new muffler put on this week which hopefully will solve the problem.

So did you get the D channel stuff in? is it any good, curious because I will be needing some soon.

It has potential,,,,,,,each piece needs about 3 feet more to go all the way around the side and rear doors,,,so figure out what you need,,,,,,,,the left doors kind of only use the weatherstrip on 3 sides of their doors, but it might be easier to just put the weatherstrip around all 4 sides rather than mess with those clips and rivets that hold it on where the 2 doors meet.....

m1d that has got to be some of the funniest and useful advice i have ever heard, HAHAHAHA. (gonna use it too)

New muffler seems to have fixed the issue. So I guess it's back to getting high the old fashioned way. Hey, it's legal here in Washington

can anyone tell me if you have to drop the cross member on a 66-gvan,230cu.in to drop the oil pan to change the gasket.thanx

YEP,,,,,,the oil pick up screen sits down in the pan, so the pan  needs to drop down,,,,,HOWEVER.....put a 2x4 or pipe on jackstands or blocks and tie the engine to it to hold it up while you drop the crossmember and the job gets easier,,,,,, I would loosen the exhaust pipe at the manifold to keep it from bending if the engine moves a little,,,,,,and it sure is easier putting the 2 motor mount bolts in 1st and then bolting the crossmember onto the frame,,,,,you better be changing the rear main seal while you are at it,,,,
