68 camaro rear bumper on a 2nd gen, anyone try it?

Post by winkyvan on Sun Jul 13, 2014 4:58 pm

Anyone ever try a 68 Camaro rear bumper on a 2nd gen chevy? I did a search and saw them on econolines and they look sweet. One is available about an hour away from me. I contacted the guy and he came back with an inner width of 62", which seems kind of narrow. It would seem the ends need trimmed? Thanks in advance

I have one on the front of my first gen. I have a '69 on the rear and it is a few inches wider.

Thanks! It looks like you trimmed the curved ends on the front? I'll have to think about it, I'm worried I'd botch the cuts and end up with scrap. On another note, I was looking at first gen bronco bumpers. Those look like a possibility, aftermarket ones are easily available and the ends don't have such a curve.

I just snagged a 69 Camaro rear bumper off craigslist for $30. It fits the front nice and two bolt holes actually line up Smile

Yes they work front and rear. However, go for the 69 bumpers, they are a little wider and clear better. I have 69's on both front and rear of my 2nd gen. The front lined up with the outer mount holes. I had to fab a couple brackets for the rear, but it was nothing fancy, just a small plate with mounting holes 2" apart on both sides.

69 rear camero bumper works great on the front of my 1st gen G. The 68 rear camero IS TOO SHORT.

the 67/72 chevy step side rear bumper works on both ends of the second gens
but looks a little out of shape on the front because it is straight, but looks awesome on the
rear. the factory brackets will need to be modified to bolt up.

I think both the Camaro and 67-72 stepside bumpers are a little too straight for the front of a 67-70 van......I've been looking at these: https://www.premierstreetrod.com/images_product/large/DII/1110H.jpg

And Premier Street Rods is near my house, so I might be able to hold one up to the van before buying....

Here's a '69 Camaro bumper on the front of my 1st gen.

And here's one on the back.

It only took about 40 hours of fabrication to make them fit like this.

the way the front one fits, looks like it was made for it. did you have to do anything
to the front bumper to fit like it does? awesome job!!!

Those look great. Can't tell if they are chromed or just polished. I am curious if they are polished and what the possibility of just clear coating the satin finish would look like as an alternative to chroming them out.

What looks like a finish on them in the pictures is actually the original chrome and new welds ground down. We started by cutting the flat lips on the top and bottom off to be able to bend them to the curve of the body. Then I ever so gently, swung them like a baseball bat up against a telephone pole to get the proper curve and welded the lips back on. Then we scribed out the inside of the ends to let them in. I had to shorten the returns on the front bumper so the doors would clear it. A lot of cutting, banging, welding and grinding to get the ends looking good. Then we filled the bolt holes and welded studs on the back for mounting and modified the frame brackets to receive them.
After all that, I couldn't see not chroming them so that's where they are now, along with my exterior door handles and GMC letters. Should be done sometime in March.
