Over the past few weeks, I played with the van some. I took out the plugs and they had no oil build up at all. They had just a little carbon, most likely ran a little on the rich side. I could turn the crank by hand (plugs out). Put some oil in each cylinder and hand turned. Keep in mind, this van sat since 1991 according to the last state inspection sticker and registration. A battery and jumper cables were hooked up and the electrical stuff checked out. I screw drivered the solenoid and it cranked (ignition off). I removed the carb and was done for the afternoon.
The next day I rebuilt the carb. By the way, while cleaning out the years of household trash that was thrown in the van, I came across an envelope, under the drivers seat. I found the 1968 warrenty book with the plate still in the back. Next came out the dealers order sheet from Curtis Chevrolet in Washington D.C.. The customer spec'd out the 250 six, heavy duty frount and rear springs, Jr west coast mirrors, aux seat, and reflectors. The next sheet was the original invoice/bill of sale, marked and signed paid in full. On this sheet was the ignition key code.
I had a key cut by the code and returned with the carburator. The key worked on all doors and ignition. Carb now back on and plugs in I shorted the negative coil lead to ground and had spark when released. None when cranked however, until I cleaned the points. I/V bottle of gas on the fuel pump and some ether, but no start. Fuel pump diaphram was gone. Hooked up I/V directly to the carb and it started! Had to restart often because of low fuel pressure. Gaterade bottle squeese did not quite mimick a working fuel pump. After a short couple of runs, the lifters pumped up and the engine smoothed out. The oil I put in the cylinders burnt off and the engine ran smoke free.
    Next step is brakes.

A friend went to a local salvage yard looking for some Suburban parts. He told me about it the next day and I just had to have a peek at it. After a few months, I was able to arrainge a sale. From the day I first saw it until I got it, all that was taken was the horn button, the fan control switch and the ash tray slides.

Well, after two months of repairing a flooded kitchen, I'm back. I did get by to put a new fuel pump on. Now it runs perfect! While running I tried to put it in reverse, but eventhough the clutch was in, the gears were grinding. I could see the fork going back, but apparently not enough. I adjusted the rod all the way out and it still grinds. The pressure plate must be rusted/seized. This Saturday I'll yank the trans and replace the disk and pressure plate.

Have you checked the fluid in trans?? Your linkage might be way out of adjustment too??

Yeah, the gear oil is good as is the linkage. I went through all the gears by hand when I had the spark plugs out and was turning by hand. Trust me, it's just a seized pressure plate. This puppy has been sitting since 1991.
    Thanks though...

You could put the parking brake on,,,,,,put it in 1st gear,,,,,,step on the clutch and see if it will start and break the clutch or pilot bushing free,,,,,,,

    To Donivan65
Yeah, you are right. That would have worked. In 70's I had the clutch disc swap down to 1 hour 45 minute, when I owned my other 68. I elected to pull the trans and bell housing to see what condition it was in. I was surprised to find the pressure plate and disc looking almost new. I put the pressure plate on the floor with the disc stuck to it and gave the center splined hub a light smack with a hammer. Tada, it's free. Put it all together again (2 hours total, apart and together) and drove it around the parking lot. Linkage and pattern are nice and tight. Shifts like a dream! Wish I knew how to post videos.
Thanks for the interest and suggestion. KP

You can't go wrong taking it apart,,,,,,,you really need to see exactly what you got anyways,,,,,,that's the best thing you can do when you get an old van,,,,,,find out the condition of the parts on it,,,,,,,like pull the tank,,,,,see whats in the gas tank,,,,,,,replace all the brake lines and hoses,,,,,make sure you have a good radiator,,,,,,,then you are off to good start to do some serious VANNIN,,,,,

Hey Kaypee, I purchased a 68 GMC yesterday. I live not too far from your location, I am in Hopewell. I am hoping to pick up the van Saturday. I wanted to ask, especially since you used to own one of these in the past, Could you direct me somewhere to look for a windshield?
So far, that is the only original part I know of that has to be replaced, it is cracked. I do NOT think it leaks, so I am not in a hurry.
I also wanted to ask, does your 68 have 5 or six lug wheels? The one I picked up has 6, and I thought it was odd. I will try to search around to see if this is an upgrade or something. Thanks, Bobby Gambill.

6 lugs is a G-20, a 3/4 ton model. And they came in 90 or 108 inch wheelbases.
