I ran across another  broken pinion shaft lock bolt in a differential today,,,,,,the problem is that the pin still had some threads on it so it had to be screwed out,,,,you dont want to drill it and destroy the threads in the case or run it down in the pinion shaft,,,,,,so I drilled a hole through a 5/16" bolt, tightened it down to the broken pin and drilled it just enough for the bit to bite the broken pin and it all came out together when I backed the bolt out,,,,,,,

Great job. Having the drill enter the pin slightly off center probably forced the pin to rotate as the bolt was backed out, keeping it taunt on the drill bit.  If it was perfectly centered, it would just stay in the hole and spin off the end of the drill bit?? You could have re-inserted the drill bit with a dab of fast set epoxy to bind it up to the tip of the drill too!.....

that offset sure did the job,,,,,,but my plan was to drill a hole in the pin and use an easy out, but  I  just freestyled a hole through the bolt in my vice because I was too lazy to drill it exactly through the center in my drill press,,,,,,I think if you tapped that bolt for a like #8 screw then run the bolt down to the pin, and run that screw down  through the bolt to lock the bolt to the pin,,,it might just all come out together,,,,,that pin didnt come out too easily, since the threads were stretched when it broke......
and you dont get a straight shot to drill since that pin is down in the case and a drill cant get close to it,,,,,,I needed to take it apart to check the axles,,,,,,,if they are shiny like  a spark  plug socket they are good,,,,,,if you see stripes,,,,they are bad,,,,,,

He can start by taking off the timing cover, camshaft gear and chain and see if its the camshaft or crankshaft that wont turn..............

Not a Chevy guy but did the crank turn prior to the install of the transmission? If so did the crank have the correct pilot bearing/bushing for the auto trans? So makes have different sizes based on standard or auto and you may have the crank bound up by the input shaft of the trans, just a wag on my part

I was getting ready to hold the flex plate so he could torque the bolts while it was on the hoist and he tells me he is done,,,,,what?,,,,so I check and that engine is locked up,,,,,its a rebuilt long block,,,,,,there is no problem  with the torque converter fitment,,,,it does not use a bushing,,,,you usually  need to check that there is not a pilot bushing in the crank when you go to an automatic trans  because most engines are set up for 3 speeds  and use one,,,,,,I told him back off on the rocker arms,,,,,but it still is locked up,,,,,,,,,he did put the oil pump and strainer on as well as the timing cover and  an aftermarket balancer on it,,,,,,so he he is not off the hook,,,,,,2 bolts hold the engine in and 1 holds the trans in, so I put them in since I brought all my equipment down to his place,,,,,I dont know if the crank is hitting something,,,valves hitting pistons,,,bearings too tight,,,,cam gear or timing chain jammed,,,,dont want to void out his warranty,,,,,,he needs to call the shop and see what they say,,,,,,,

ok,,,,,,today was a Zack day,,,,,,last time I was there the rebuilt engine that we put in was locked up,,,,,I could not turn it with a breaker bar on the crank with the spark plugs out,,,,,I told him have the engine shop come over and take a look at it,,,,,they came and put 2 guys on the breaker bar and told him now it turns,,,,,so he starts putting the parts back on and I go over and we do some wiring and disk brake work on it and try and see if it will fire up,,,,,,I spray some carb cleaner down the carb and it fired up for a few seconds,,,he needs to put the exhaust system on now to see if it will run,,,,,,

Zack needs to make up the exhaust system next,,,,,then put the radiator back in,,,,but he has directions on how to break the engine in,,,,,,,,the shop claims the break in lube was stopping the engine from turning,,,,,Zack did add oil with zinc in it,,,,,,so we shall see how the engine runs and sounds once he puts more parts back on,,,,,
