The dead bit - needs an engine re-build or part rebuild Sad

0 Compression on one piston, front one closest to drivers seat.  It has not been pulled apart yet, the van still runs ok but I need to get it sorted.  Pulling apart an engine is a little out of my league so I will be giving her to a garage.

Whats the most likely scenario - a burnt exhaust valve?? -

    - Do the pics work?

Steve, if you squirt some oil into that cylinder and re-test and it brings the compression back it is a piston ring problem. If there is no change it most likely will be in the valve train. That is a starting place anyway. I'm sure the Dodge Boys here will know if there can other issues but I can not recall SB mopars having a lot of burnt valve problems. Good Luck and a very nice looking van !

Possibly= & Likely a exhaust valve that is cracked or a hole burned in it!! Ill add= likely also =if its starting to give u problems like that =consider a total rebuild =u will avoid more problems down the road & can just enjoy it!!cheers

Polosteve, plenty of info for rebuilding a small block mopar out there.
I agree that it's most likely it's a burnt valve. Another possibility is the cam lobe is worn.
You can probably find writing or video on how to check for these. I'd do it so you know upfront how much time and money is going to be needed to get it back together.
Better to save up and gather parts before taking it apart.

nice van, its much cheaper to just get a rebuilt engine, if your engine has the years on it and miles every seal is hardened, so you would need to completly rebuild it, by the time you get the block, cam, crank and head work done it would be more than a rebuilt engine from a part store, i found one for 1500

Well, I bit the bullet and pulled the head off - a buggered exhaust valve was the scenario. Head is off at a local machine shop, a light reface, new guide, valve seat and check the health of the rest.

Pulling it all to pieces was fun - putting it back together should be interesting

    Work in progress Smile

    The offending valve

Aye, importing a recon lump would not be cheap! So i'm sticking with this one for now. I will no doubt have a few questions when refit time comes round.

I am waiting on a fell-pro full gasket kit and a new valve whilst the head is at the machine shop.

    Merry Christmas All!

    Been busy...

The head had new valve and valve seats by a local machine shop, all put back together and she lives.  Running on 8 for the first time in possibly a long time! Huge thanks to my Dad.

    We have also fitted:
    - A new vacuum advance unit
    - A new fuel pump
    - Rebuilt the carb
    - A new neutral safety switch (after i started her in drive...)

I'm pretty sure there is a lot more I have missed off, the van still needs attention, she does not like to idle very much but drives good once going.

I started on the interior, new ceiling panels insulated and lined in some period-ish material.

Thanks chaps, got a little more done over the festive period, less of the mechanical and more of the tarty interior stuff Smile

The ceiling is 3mm plywood stuck to batons, the batons were bonded to the van roof.  Seeing as there were no templates or old ceiling panels the ceiling took several days just to get the wood to shape.  Covered in a period-ish vinyl using spray glue.  The glue used is from a company called mega van mats in the uk, very good stuff - no carpet falling of walls in the middle of the summer months heat.  I used some automotive insulation off a roll, similar to wool but synthetic as it is water resistant.  Seeing as I don't need to save weight or space dynamat seemed an expensive option, especially with the amount needed.

The walls are 6mm ply covered in stretchy carpet with insulation behind, again screwed to bonded on batons.  The floor is gates automotive underlay, rubber stuff with 12mm marine ply and topped off with non slip industrial lino.  Not exactly a period finish but its light in colour inoffensive and usable. - I can always stick a shagadelic 60's carpet over the top if needed...

Wax-oiled areas of the floor whilst I was there.

Still work in progress, the van even with two stupid cherry bomb silencers (silencers???) feels and sounds like a limo to drive in comparison to the tin can it was a few weeks ago! Much refined, but more to do.

In the future I hope to loose the cherry bombs maybe for some flowmasters and have the pipes going to the back.  Order a rock and roll bed/seat for the back and start some general day van/camper things.  On my wish list is some factory style wheel vintiques 63 style steel wheels with dog dish caps - painted the white colour... when funds allow.  It would possibly be a good idea to drive her futher than 10 miles to see what breaks!  Shocked

    Peace, happy new year!

Not many people around here in Europe with these old buggers. I know 7 or 8 (all body styles combined)here in Finland, 3 or 4 in Sweden and yours in UK. We are a rare breed. Even the US guys have trouble seeing another example that does not belong to someone they already know.

About Econolines I know 2 and one Chevy flat six engined model here. Not much.

I wish there'd be a gathering of us Euro old vanners someday. I'd vote the western Denmark area for that.

Hey Jari, there are quite a few old vans in the uk. All spread out though over the country, loads of old vw's though.

I love the look of your rear steels, what are the exact sizes of the wheels?
    Width 9"
    Bolt pattern 5x4.5
    Offset?

    I know the tires are 255 60 15

I thought 9" wheels would rub on stock arches and suspension, yours look great!

They are original 15" Mopar steelies. 6,5" wide in front and I widened the rears to 9". All outwards. Then I intentionally fitted the 255 tires so the sides would travel slightly inwards to clear the wheel arches. That's also what I wanted to have in the front to give the tires some old look. First I had 205/60R15 in the front but they were slightly too short and too wide so I changed them to 195/65R15 which looked a lot better.
