    Millwright71's A108 Empty Millwright71's A108

    Post by millwright71 Wed Jan 02, 2013 11:21 am

I never really started a thread about my 67 A108, so here it goes. My Dad had a 67 econoline supervan when I was a kid, he never really drove it, but it sat in our back yard. I used to sit in it and mess around like I was driving.
A friend of mine at work had a restored econoline pick up and we always talked about how I would like to have a flat nose van, I am not a Ford guy, so I was looking for a Dodge, or a Chevy.
He told me about a Dodge panel van on Craigslist in my hometown, so I contacted the guy, heard it run, and had to have it! It is a 318 3 speed, 50K miles. Here it is the day I bought it, approximately Feb 2012. Millwright71's A108 54510

    Millwright71's A108 Empty Pictures

    Post by millwright71 Wed Jan 02, 2013 11:57 am

I took alot of pictures while I have been working on the body. I drove it alot for the first couple months just to get a feel for what it needed, and what I wanted to do to it. I have welded in all new sheet metal wherever there was rust, mostly along the rockers, and front fenders. The rear corners were in bad shape, as well as the rear roll pan.

looks real nice, mine has some bubbles in the paint on the rear corners, i'll bet its rust starting to come through, the paint on mine is real thin, it was a shity job just so he could sell it, when ever it gets bad i'll fix it and primer the hole van,

    Millwright71's A108 Empty Rust

    Post by millwright71 Wed Jan 02, 2013 12:45 pm

The rear corners tend to rust where the floor lap joints to them. Also, it is worth checking into how much dirt has accumulated inside the rear roll pan. It was amazing how much sand, dirt, and gravel I got out of it with the shop vac when I pulled the rear bumper, and it's brackets out of the way. I stripped the entire body down to bare steel, then I put several coats of etch primer, high build, and finally epoxy primer sealer on her after block sanding that body for what seemed like weeks.

I second the dirt in the pans!
Also, pull the little triangle plates inside and get all the dirt out of the back of the dogleg!

Thanks for the compliment Savage! We still need to get together for those parts for my Chevy, maybe even give you a hand on the big block project? Rod, my doglegs were so rusted out, the dirt done already fell out! Lol.

They do have them, and they are heavy gauge metal, and they fit really well. I bought at least one of every panel they make for the A's. I highly recommend them.

    Millwright71's A108 Empty Progress

    Post by millwright71 Fri Jan 11, 2013 3:03 pm

I have been working on the floor lately. I got the seams coated with rust bullet some time ago, I followed the manufacturers instructions and covered the entire floor including the passenger area with a do-it-yourself spray on bedliner product. It looks really good. I am hoping it does double duty, sound deadener, and a rust preventative when I cover the floor later when I get to the interior. Pics to follow!

I am currently cleaning up the engine, replaced all of the gaskets, New valve seals, and paint. I am putting a new clutch kit in her, then having the old trunion joint removed from the driveshaft in favor of a slip yoke and universal joint.

I have my part number wrote down but you should use a u joint that is very popular and you can remember like 1970 duster or the same as used in the rear . so later on it does not become hard to find. you can also buy a spare now nad never worry about it. the drive shaft should cost around $200.00 but a great up grade.

Good idea Mr dix. You might be able to fit a couple of them into the battery box, or just carry the old driveshaft under the passenger seat, next to the come-along... While towing tandum U-hauls on cross-country trips they only last about 2,500 miles.
