Headers and Side Pipes Empty Headers and Side Pipes

Post by mbasaraba Mon Jan 07, 2013 6:24 am

Tammy and I decided long ago that we wanted to have Side Pipes on whatever van we had. Since we are installing the 350 that gives the chance to have dual exhaust.

Been looking on Summit at their set ups, Patriot looks like an affordable option but was hoping to find a set with a Carbon Fiber heat shield at least over a small section of the pipe, I worry about the kids getting out of the side doors and burning their leg on the pipe.

Anyone with side pipes that can give some info on how hot they get?

Header, a must have or just for performance? Tammy says she doesnt need more power than the stock 350 will give her, she is a cruiser, not a racer. Was planning on just using the stock exhaust manifolds but for less than $200 can get a set of headers also. Can maybe get a better price on eBay, but havent looked yet.

don`t have any ideas for the side pipe thing,
as for the headers, block huggers, medium length
or long tube headers, any will work, just make
sure that the flange thickness is at least 5/16
thick or thicker, the header bolts tend to stay
tighter for a much longer period of time, stock
exaust manifolds work just fine also.
the headers are hotter when running but cool off
much faster than the stock manifolds and they are
a little less noisy than the manifolds, sound weird
but true. if going headers make sure and get the
coated ones not the rust prone painted ones, worth it
    for sure. hope this helps

I'll get flak for this but, I would use the stock manifolds. Headers are great but seems always checking header bolts, blown collector gaskets. Install manifolds once forget about them. Bob

Yeah we have decided to use the stock Exhaust manifolds. Now it is just a question of side pipes or not. Wish I knew how LOUD they would be. We dont want anything obnoxious, but would be nice if it got "Throaty" when under load...

What Bob said, headers are cool sometimes but an absolute pain in the A most of the time.

    m1d

Throaty sound under load happens when the exhaust system ahead of the muffler is larger dia ( like 3 or 3.5" pipe)and then smaller pipes towards the tail Like 2" and the length of the tail pipe tunes the sound of the forward pipe. The ringing and growling happens in the front pipes.

If the tail pipe is larger dia you get that "BLatting and farting " sound like a school buss. The "Big ass" sound as opposed to throaty.

Lol M1D, I was about to post a reply saying that was the shortest reply from you to date, when you just had "What Bob said"!

Thanks for coming back and adhering to my expectations of a thorough response!

To acquire more info on your explanation, are there certain "Systems" that should be looked at / avoided dependent on the sound anticipated?

One of the biggest problem with side pipes are hooking them up because the inlet is about the same spot where the manifold ends have to use s pipes, and most states they are not legal. If you want side pipes look at patriot they have some nice stuff. bob

They get hot! They're coming right off the exhaust! Even with the louvered covers installed. I wouldn't do it to a vehicle that will be around kids.

Read the corvette forums about side pipes and leg burns

Ive seen dual side pipes on one side of the vehicle a couple times before. I thought it looked pretty tough! They had them staggered most often so the lowest pipe was more forward, but Ive seen em stacked and staggered the other way before too. ALways looks really BA, and on the other side of the van, no kids will be hurt by the making of this exhaust.

The difference between a Corvette and our vans is you don't have to get out from a super low seated position and swing way out right over the side pipe just to get out the door. The driver and passenger would have no problem.

You can make a heat shield out of polished stainless and back it with some sort of high temp material to help. Really all you need is a section right under the side doors.

How old are the kids? Mine is 2 1/2 and there is no way she could be around something like that without testing it out! She's retarded just like her dad...

You should be fine. That's plenty old enough to know. A couple pairs of asbestos socks and you're in business!

side pipes are "throaty", very easy to listen to under moderate load, I like mine a lot. However, be warned they can get a little loud at 65mph going down the highway, inside the van I mean. Of course, riding in my van is like going down the road in an empty garbage can in a hail storm anyway, at least until I get the fat matt and insides done Smile

The pipes have covers over the center but they get very hot on the ends, its plain old chromed steel, if you touch it you will stick. I make sure my kids know not to to touch them and I put them in and out when we ride, they cant crawl in the side door without touching the pipes.

Additionally, make sure you measure correctly! Whoever ordered mine got them too long and mounted them to far forward into the front wheel wells. When I put bigger tires on they hit the pipes so I had to cut them down and remount them about 8" further to the rear.
