    O/T Fiberglass ? Empty O/T Fiberglass ?

Post by wideload Thu Feb 16, 2012 10:42 am

I've got a fiberglass project under way and need to know if there is anything that you can coat a piece of wood with to keep fiberglass from sticking to it. In needs to be something that will spread smoothly or soak into the wood(maybe some type of oil???).

I've been using aluminum foil but cant get it as smooth as I'd like to.

When they make moulds for fibreglass, they apply a special wax to the mould to prevent the fibreglass from sticking to it. I would think this would be your best bet.

Something like that is what I'm looking for Sy. My mold is made from wood so some sort of wax should work. Just need to find out what kind. Thanks!!

Stop by the same place where you got the 'glass supplies. They should have "Mold Release" or something similar.
In a pinch, you could probably melt candle wax on the wood. To smooth it, use a heated butter knife.
Even a good car wax (not cleaner wax, just straight wax) applied a in few coats should do it.

If the wood is smooth (not alot of open pores for the resin to grip) you could use paste wax

I've seen PVA adhesive (the white stuff) use as a release agent.

I once rented a car to an advertising company to shoot a commercial.

The car was dark green and half way through they wanted a white one (it was a 911 Porsche so they aren't too thick on the ground).

We painted it with PVA glue, let it dry then painted it white.

Once the ad was finished we used a pressure cleaner to blast away the paint. Not a spot of white.

I belive this was how they took the white paint off the Lambo in Cannnonball Run.

    Hi Mike,

I do a lot of mold building and work with molds
in my shop. As been mentioned you need a parting
agent. Assuming your wood mold is smooth and
polished, and you are using basic polyester tooling
resin, you will need to do two steps.

First is wax the mold. Use a true carnuba wax not
modern spray waxes for cars. Do this three times,
wax then wipe smoothly after each coat.

Second is to get some Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) which
is usually sprayed from a paint gun, or airbrush.
Shoot 3 coats, allowing the PVA to dry completely
    between each coat.

After the PVA is dry, then start applying your resin
work. Some sort of seal or gel coat is recommended
on the mold/PVA before the glass is put on.

    Best of luck,
    George

You're more than welcome Mike, I understand you can get
PVA in a spray can from Paint Suppy type shops. I molded
some custom carbon graphite seat hinge covers for my Econo:
    O/T Fiberglass ? Seatbu10
    O/T Fiberglass ? Seatbu13
    O/T Fiberglass ? Seatbu14

Kind of a combo of the old and the new.

Hope this isn't considered a hijack! Laughing
Molding parts comes in handy for mods to our Econolines!!

    Best Regards,
    George

Those are sweet George. I'll check on the PVA sometime this coming week. Think I'm going to try the endust that Casimier suggested on a practice piece also. My project is small with no complicated bends.
