Idiot Light to gauge Empty Idiot Light to gauge

Post by Casimier Tue Jul 19, 2011 9:27 am

I came across a "67 oil pressure and amp gauge and I'd like to replace my idiot lights.
I noticed that the gages have TWO hookups on the back.
The idiot lights have only one.
    Anyone familiar with the swap?
If it matters, I have a '66. I thought that gages were an upgrade option in '66 so I'm wondering if I already have the built in wires in my harness.
    Any ideas?

Are you sure that the 1 wire sockets are not the dash lights put into the wrong hole? The gauges need 2 wires,,,,,power to them and then another wire that goes down to the sender,,,,,,and,,,,,,speaking of senders,,,,,,you need the correct one that matches the gauge so it reads right,,,,,,,,some gauges have a 3rd wire to illuminate them,,,,,,Some oil gauges have a tube that fills with oil to make the gauge work instead of by electricity,,,,,,,

Idiot Light to gauge Empty Gagues

    Post by Twinpilot001 Wed Jul 20, 2011 5:42 am

Doni is =Exactly correct!! The oil gagues that use a line from engine to dash gague are termed="Mechanical" gages - if ever you do install one - always use=
copper like -NOT a Plastic one - also when using the copper line - put a small round coil in it- prevents pulsing & noise! Just thinking= ive never seen an =electric vacumn Gague??-HeHe= affraid

Jim, did you get the harness that goes from the back of the amp guage to the alternator?

    Carl
If you can help...did not get the harness
I have a '66 idiot light setup and want to upgrade with my '67 gage panel.
Can you tell me the color of the 2 wires that go to the amp and the 2 wires that go to the oil gage and can you trace them back to their origin.
My '66 manual only shows the idiot light wiring.
Obviously they need a source wire...the oil pressure sending switch covers that one wire...the source for the alternator( I need a check on the color and the point of connection on that wire)...
Now back at the Panel....you have your source wires going into their respective gages....where does the other wire come from? Does it come from
a power source like a constant voltage regulator on the panel?
Wish I had a '67 dash wiring diagrahm.
    Hey how about some pics?

I took the cluster and harness from our '67 parts van with plans to put in in the Cassius Clay '67 (before it met its fate!). I dug it all out and took a look at our '66 that already had guages and here's what I came up with:

    Idiot Light to gauge Harnes10

    Idiot Light to gauge 01dash10

    Idiot Light to gauge 02regu10

    Idiot Light to gauge 03engi10

If you can find a wiring harness you'd be way ahead of the game!
If you have any more questions let me know.

amp gauges in Chryslers are notorious for issues often leading to meltdown!
I'd suggest that a voltage gauge is better.
I seriously doubt the factory would have a harness that is already wired for different clusters, so you will have to find a diagram and run new wire.

If you already have a 66 with gages...tell me what wires go where...
I see that the oil gage wiring is simple...white/red stripe to one pole and black to the other..
The amp gage is hard to see....wires looped together? can't see the connection..hidden bay the clamp
wire that wa shere goes here? is that abandoned?

I do agree with Rod...if there is not a true example of what I have to do to the 66 then I'll have to new wire for a the 67 dash gages.

    Casimier,
The amp gauge is easy. The large wire is just looped thru the metal ring on the back of the gauge. It reads amperage as it passes thru the ring. If it reads backwards just reverse the direction of the wire. There is no actual wire to hook up to a terminal. It works like a timming light on a spark plug wire.

    Carl,

I don't understand why you removed the wires from the gauge regulator on the back of the cluster. You need that hooked up so the fuel and temp gauge don't recieve full voltage. If the fuel and temp get hit with twelve volts they will burn up, or did I miss something?

Duane, I didn't remove any wires! In photo #2 I was trying to show that the original wire on a no-guage dash goes to the harness for the guage dash. All it does is act as a splitter to get the (reduced) power to the oil guage too.

I have a '67 with all of the gauges, Duane is correct: the ammeter is a shunt type which uses current flow from the alternator. If current flows from the alternator to the battery, the gauge will move right and visa-versa. In short, your alternator charge wire needs to go through the dash then back to the battery.

Here are 2 diagrams scanned from the '67 shop manual that show you how it is wired:

    Hey Ray
I used the stock econoline gages....
Remember, you really have to wire brush clean the terminals and posts on the these connections or the lights and gages (bulbs too) wont work properly....had to reaassemble everything !!!
