Post by kltcustoms Wed Jan 26, 2011 2:13 pm

    Ok I am needing opnions:

My vans motor died and I have had nothing but bad luck with slant 6 motors so I was thinking of doing a V-8 Swap. I was looking for a mid 80's Diplomat or New Yorker with v-8 auto trans/OD and swap it all in my van.

I don't know alot about cars I know some but I am just not sure if the old slant 6's can take a highway speed of 75 + safely.....around were I live if you can't do at leaste that you get run over.

Right now I have a 1976 Dodge 225 Super 6 with spun bearing and the stock 727 trans. I bought a "replacement" engine but its blocked is cracked so I am back to square one on what to do. Go back to looking for a good 6 or find a 318 to put in? I have a guy that has a 318 with trans for $100 and ran good when pulled.

    What to do???

I'm think you just had bad luck that motor and other slant six motors you have had. All the slant 6 motors I have had have been iron horses

What you need to do is find a grandma car with a good low miles motor

I have a 68 Sportsman with good running 318/3sp that I would sell. This has all the stuff for an engine swap like radiator, throttle linkages, motor mounts etc. Lots of other good parts on it and it is in Idaho. At one time it was on its side and wasn't fixed properly and has a few rust issues but a great donor van. $700 Don

I found a 0 miles completely rebuilt top to bottom 1966 slant 6 for $400 if I wanted to go that route... my main issue is: will it do highway speeds? I will add my 2 brl intake but not sure if that will even help...?

highway speeds are a function of engine power, gearing, tire size, vehicle weight and aero.
a slant 6 can do this, but the other stuff must be right too. You can't do it with 3.91s and a short (25") tire comfortably, the engine will be screaming.
You probably can't do it with 2.76s and a tall (32") tire, because the engine RPM will be too low to develop enough power to overcome the aero and weight.

The parts van is probably the cheapest way to do it. A V8 and auto from another car still requires the radiator, engine mounts, wiring changes, and the trans won't fit like the special trans from a van. It will be a bunch of work, but there is always a trade-off between the triangle of project requirements; time, money, and skills/equipment.

Keep the slant- it will work good 4 ya - just need to inspect the new motor before u trust its as said by the owner!! or- get one rebuilt - that way u wont have any problems.

Keep in mind that you can search craigslist for engines and running cars as well. A good way to buy motors is to just buy a running car, pull the driveline and call a junkyard to come get the rest for scrap. Search for darts, valiants, older trucks etc, all the stuff slants and 318's typically came in. That way you can hear it run or drive it before you buy.

Slant six's are good engines, sound like you just have a couple of bad ones.

Might want to look at swappin' the rear gears. I swaped my 68's 3:91 to 3:23. Made a huge diffrence . And Its a slant six as well. Keep the six. Keep the 2bl. as well. It will work on the 66 your lookin at. 2.76 gears are gutless in our vans(will work on automatics but not standard) lots of clutch slippage!. Buying a 30-40 year old doner for a simple engine swap not happening! You need a few benjamins for New oil pump timeing chain gasket set ect. not nessicarily rebuilding but refreshing the engine while its out in the open. Saves a lot of grief and fusteration down the road.

Ok update: Went to look at the motor today.... OK were to start? I meet him at 8:30 am and follow him to his brothers shop. Half way there the guy I am following pulls over to the side of the road. He gets out to tell me his brothers wife wanted to go to breakfast so we had to kill 2 1/2 untill they were done.... The wife and I when thrift store shopping so no big deal right? Well time comes to meet them at the shop....

We meet up and the brother shows late and doesn't have the keys to open the shop were the "rebuilt" 225 has been peacefully resting for a short time.. So another 3 hours of time I am being forced to spend with my wife!!! Smile

So we show up AGAIN to see the motor...unlocked the gate, door to the shop then 3 other doors and finally a siren alarm that I sill here in my ears!!! The again "REBUILT" motor was resting on a tire on a palet no valve cover or exhaust manifold. Turned out after listening to the brother who rebuilt the motor, didn't at all. The motor was taken out cuz the flywheel bolts came loose. They thru new seals back on and painted it...called it good. Its been sitting under a leaking roof (Right on the motor) for the last 15 years.

The kicker? it was a 170cid not a 225 Sad

Where did you get your 3:23 gears at? I have 3:91 gears in my truck and it keeps the engine screeming at 55 mph. Would like to be able to drive it to some distant shows and it not eat me up in gas.
