Hello everyone

Post by Guest on Thu Dec 29, 2011 5:16 pm

Hello everyone, I have been lurking on the site for a month or two. I am restoring a '64 Econoline cargo van, passenger side barn doors, no windows.(170, 3spd). I am going through the whole van, from the ground up. I have been taking a ton of pictures and will post. I'm trying to go through the van one system at a time. So far I've gone through the transmission, rear end, suspension, brakes and heater. Still deciding on what to do with the engine, mine ran, but it is in need of a rebuild, its already on .040 over on pistons. So I am thinking of swapping out for a 200. I would hate to do a full rebuild on the four bearing block on its last bore. This is my first van, I came across it by accident, I wasn't even looking, but when I saw it parked for sale, I had to have it. Totally hooked now, and glad to see that I'm not the only one.
Steve

Hi all! Newbee here! I get mine in an "Econoline"! Been into cars/hot rods forever and got my first van in 1970. A 61 phone van with maintenance logs that showed 500,000 miles. I couldn't afford two vehicles so it didn't take long for me to get fed up with the performance of the 144 engine and in the fall of 1970 I swapped in a 289 engine and upgraded the mounts, trans and rear end out of a Heavy Duty. The rest is history and I kept upgrading into the 80's. I'm back!
I have "been there and done that"! My list of adventures include;
Van Nationals,King City 3 times late 70's
Member of Canyon State Vans 1974-1979
Winner of VanGo I at OCIR and placed at VanGo II(van drags)
7000 vans at Beech Bend Camp Ground in late 70's
Many Van Rallies in Ca.,Az.,Nv.and Co.
Current,
1966 Supervan/ 1988 Thunderbird Turbocoupe hybrid work in progress. (ThunderVan)
1966 Supervan /Fe big block, 4 speed, work in progress. (BumbleBee II)
I have 4 Supervans, 1 HD shorty and 1 63 Pick Up and spare parts that I have dragged around for 40 years!

Thanks G-Man! Is that a 108 or a shorty? I like the color! All my vans have been canary yellow with black stripes. Thats where I got the handle, Bumblebee. When I figure out how to put a pic in my sig I have an old b&w photo of my first van. The air scoop is for the ac condenser mounted under the truck.

So what mods have you done to the Ford? When I retired the Bumblebee it had a 351C 4V 4 speed and a 543 locker that sounded like a P51 at the end of the 1/4 mile. I miss it and I should have the FE big block running by spring.
I remember when I ran at OCIR the Cal guys were upset about my lack of smog plumbing that they had to run. Being from AZ. all I was running was a PCV. I feel your pain!

That's all you need in a 4X4. What front axle are you using? I used to go places in the desert that 4X4's wouldn't try and all I had was a posi! That's going to be a fun ride!

I JUST received delivery of Steve's 8Ball! ODDBall is more like it...think start up on a C-47 Dakota. Steve is true modern hot rodder...his problem solving and engineering is amazing. Never read about half his mods anywhere, truly remarkable.

As for myself, I love wagons and vans and have stalked various A100's and Econolines for a decade or so and dove at this one. My skills aren't great, never really had the resources to do much, but I counter that by reading whatever I can, drawing and dreaming, BUT all the reading never prepped me for what went into 8Ball!

Things are different now and as realisticly, I'll never have much space -full size Ram as well- and I'll probably never own a '76 Lambo Espada S3, I'll have this van until it or me are dead. So its gonna get all of my attention! I'll post a sketch of the planned finished product as soon as I've figured how the thing works.

Cheers!
