My 1967 Falcon Club Wagon Empty My 1967 Falcon Club Wagon

Post by SoapDude Tue Feb 23, 2010 6:20 am

First of all, I would like to say hello to everyone here. I have spent all morning reading through your posts. This place is awesome! I would like to submit some info on my 1967 Ford Falcon Club Wagon project. My girlfriend and I bought her a few months ago and have been slowly sanding the paint off and planning the interior. We are hoping to drive this van across country this summer.

So far, we have sanded and spot primed most of the van. All of the glass has been removed from the van and now I am on the hunt for window seals. I would like to make as many of the windows vent as is possible. Has anyone tried this? A good friend of mine modified a Carter YF carb from a late 60s ford and it works great. The old autolite was in terrible shape, and after reading about the performance and gas mileage improvements on the YF, we decided to try it. We kept the original oil bath airbox and modified it to fit the larger YF. Because we are planning on taking a long trip with this van, all engine modifications will revolve around gas mileage.nWe chose the van because it runs great and has almost no rust beyond the surface. There are a few golf ball sized holes where the rust actually did rust through on the bottom of the sides and one that is maybe the size of a tennis ball. They will all have new metal hopefully next week.

We are currently working on the van in a good friend of mine's shop. He is actually the one who found the van and we bought it from him. Within the next few weeks, she will be moved to a cabinet shop where we will be working on building a bed unit in the back, and a countertop setup with one seat in the middle. After the cabinets are built, She'll be heading to another friends shop to be properly painted.

I have tons of pictures if I can figure out how to upload them here. I am very excited about this project and your website! Hopefully I can get some pictures up soon and share our van with all of you!

More pictures, but this is going to be all for now... Here's the worst of the rust. It's on the back doors, but it all came out smooth with a few pits. Painting it with rust converter and then smoothing it with some icing...

soapdude cool looking E, two of my favorite fetures of the fords are the quarter windows behind the front doors and the dash. have you decided on a paint scheme. also like the 240 6 cyl. and comsider yourself lucky to have all that help, all i need to do is grab a sheet of sandpaper and everyone runs and hides but stand in line to ride.

Thanks Bob! If you notice, in the pictures, I'm not working at all haha! I like all of those things about the falcon as well.. I really love my van! The only thing is the engine.. I've been considering swapping the 240 for something smaller to improve gas mileage. The paint is going to be a close to original Sea foam green, but I'm not sure about the interior yet. I'm thinking something crazy though..

Post by SoapDude Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:26 pm

Hey guys, I'm back with this old van..! It's been a hell of a year and I can't believe that the van pretty much looks today like it did in these pictures. We had some great motivation to get things started but ended up having some personal troubles. My girlfriend broke her ankle and we got caught up with other things...

We now have the van in our garage and will be starting work on it again next week. Much of the surface rust has returned but I am determined to get her on the road this year!

I have a couple of questions for you guys... What do you do about the door hinges? Mine are so ugly and rusty.. I was planning on hitting them with an angle grinder and painting them to match the van?

Also, I have a round 1 inch hole in the center of the roof of the van. What could this have been for?

I currently have all of the glass removed from the van. I purchased some power vent window hinges from a ford explorer and I want to make the long back windows vent using this power hinge. Has anyone tried this? Thanks in advance! I'm looking forward to getting back to work on this!

Welcome back, glad you havent given up on it ,, it is a decent looking van.
Sometimes it takes awhile to feel like you are gaining on them. The 1" hole was probably for a CB antenna or something like that, you can leave it and doa seal up with a plug or fill it in, if you ever think you may be putting a cover on the ol girl a cb antenna can be a PITA. I left the hole and used an old nub of a base and some sealer . but wish now I had just filled it in. A sand blaster works the best on the hinges if you can take them off, could do them one ata time so you dont have to re-align to much. Keep some primer handy and break it down into sections, sometimes trying to do it all at once can overwhelm you. The big thing is keep it fun! The window idea sounds cool , hope someone can help you out with that. Keep some pics coming !

Thanks everyone! I'm out working on the van today.. We have one last day until the snow comes back. How do you get the hinges off this thing? They're riveted on... Do you just drill them out and replace with bolts? I should have figured the hole was for an antenna.. I used to have a cb in my car! Thanks again, I'll keep you posted!

Hey G-Man, I assume you're talking about the pin that connects the two parts of the hinge? How about where they connect to the actual door and to the body? Are you saying I can pound them out there also?

Hey zberman, thanks for the welcome! Yes, I'm planning on taking it all the way across the country. My girlfriend and I make and sell soaps for a living and we're planning on driving across country selling soaps at different festivals along the way.. As long as we finally get her running this year! It started snowing again today in Ohio, but as soon as the weather gets nice again, I'll be pulling her out for more pictures.

A few more questions for you guys... I'm going to be rewiring the whole van.. I read somewhere on this forum about the EZ wiring harnesses... How do you like them? I was originally planning on running individual wires, but thought the EZ wires looked cool....

Also, I'm still trying to decide what to do about removing the hinges from the body and from the door. I'd love to remove them but I may just take the sand blaster to them while they're still attached.

    Thanks again!

So I bought the above hinge popper (found it cheaper though) and it came today. It seems like it should work, but is going to take a lot of beating! I didn't have much time today but I gave the pins a couple of smacks with this device and a hammer and they didn't budge... Looks like I have some fun times ahead of me!

On a side note, I got a new battery today. I started her up this morning and drove around the garage a bit. It amazes me how well she runs after all these years! I'm planning on cleaning the engine up a bit and doing some minor engine work, but it shouldn't need much at all!

I have the fuel line running to a gas can for now. I'll be dropping the tank this weekend and seeing how much work is going to be involved there.

I'll keep you updated and hopefully I'll have some more pictures this weekend!

Post by SoapDude Sun Feb 27, 2011 10:30 am

I had a productive weekend! A friend had given me a very old torpedo heater a while back that hadn't worked in years. I spent a couple of hours yesterday getting it to work and now it runs like brand new!

I tried to get the doors off but so far the hinge popper hasn't been a big help. I didn't put too much into it yet, but it looks like I'm still going to have to heat the hinges up to get them off.

So here's what I accomplished today. I'll try to get some pictures up as soon as my camera charges.

1)Pulled the trailer hitch. I think I'm going to keep it, but I'll have to clean it up and repaint it.

    2) Dropped the gas tank. I've been running gas out of a 5 gallon gas can since I got the van and the gas in the tank was nasty! I hate the smell of old gas... The tank is solid. I plan on cleaning it up and coating the inside. Any recommendations? Also, is there a trick to removing the sending unit?

    3) Pulled the bumper brackets. I'll be sandblasting them and then I'll paint them to match.

The rest of the morning was spent doing general sanding on the body. It's definitely coming along! My camera is charging now, and I'll try to post some pictures later.
